Let's Talk About Tim Scott

Several speeches during night 1 of the RNC were "fascinating" to watch, but S.C. Senator Tim Scott's was the one to stand out in a positive way.

While others fell flat telling bad jokes and screaming into the microphone (*cough *cough Kimberly Guilfoyle), Tim Scott gave an even-tempered message that was effective.

As the first African-American senator from South Carolina, Tim used his own political career to combat the idea of a "racist America." In 2010, Tim ran for Congress against Paul Thurmond, the son of notorious segregationist and former S.C. Senator, Strom Thurmond. Despite the odds, Tim won his practically all-white congressional district.

"Because of the evolution of the heart, in an overwhelmingly white district... the voters judged me on the content of my character, not the color of my skin."

One of the most powerful moments was when Tim told the story of his grandfather, who was forced to drop out of school to pick cotton in the third grade. Although Tim's grandfather never finished his education, he did go on to see Tim become the first African American elected to both the United States House and Senate.

"Our family went from Cotton to Congress in one lifetime."

Overall, Tim's speech seemed to be setting the stage for his own presidential campaign in 2024.
